When choosing organic foods, not everything you purchase at the grocery store must be organic, if you are looking to lower your grocery budget.
The main downfall to organically grown foods are the price tag. Organically grown foods are foods that are not sprayed with harmful chemicals and that are not genetically modified. In other words, they are the foods our ancestors consumed. They are more nutrient dense than conventionally-sprayed crops.
Fruits and vegetables that have a delicate skin such as lettuce, celery and carrot absorbs and collects the sprayed chemical residue. Hence why organic versions are safer to consume.
Here are the most important organic foods to purchase:
Strawberry
Spinach
Potato
Celery
Carrot
Tomato
Grapes
Kale
Nectarine
Apple
Peach
Pear
Organic chicken, dried fruits, coconut and wine are also important to avoid antibiotics (in chicken), and sulphites (in dried fruits, coconut and wine).
Non-organic foods that are “okay” to purchase include: Avocado, pineapple, melon, onion, cauliflower and green peas. These foods that are thick-skinned can be purchased conventionally since the sprayed chemicals are harder to penetrate through their thick skins.
Happy eating,
