Who doesn't like a block of chocolate?
When it comes to chocolate, we like to enjoy it but which one is Nutritionist approved?
What makes chocolate unhealthy is the added sugars and milk solids (which usually comes from poor quality cow’s milk). What makes chocolate healthier is the cocoa.
Cocoa powder (listed as "cocoa solids" in the ingredients list) is loaded with antioxidants and minerals such as magnesium and potassium which are important for heart health and weight loss. Cocoa also contains fibre to help you feel fuller for longer.
White chocolate is usually the unhealthiest type because it contains the most sugar and milk. It can contain up to 60% sugar!
Milk chocolate is also unhealthy because it usually contains as much sugar.
Dark chocolate is the healthiest type because it contains the least amount of sugar and the most cocoa out of the 3 types of chocolates.
• 60% cocoa dark chocolate, good
• 70% cocoa dark chocolate, very good
• > 80% cocoa dark chocolate, the best!
The more cocoa added, the less sugar it contains. If you're not fond of dark chocolate, it may be because you haven't tasted a good quality dark chocolate yet. Start with 65% cocoa dark chocolate and increase the percentage slowly as your taste buds adjust. A good quality dark chocolate that tastes great and is healthier is "Green & Blacks Organic dark chocolate" that you can find in most supermarkets in Australia.
Another tip to make chocolate healthier for you – select those with almonds. This will reduce the total sugar intake.
Happy eating,
