Eating Out

Today's fast food and restaurant meals are nearly four times the size they were in the 1950s.

Studies show that we consume 200 more calories when we eat out.

When eating out is our only and last resort we want to make wise eating choices given the limited healthy options available.

Fast Food Tips

  • Choose the restaurant beforehand and check out the online menu. Also read online reviews, check the calorie count and look at food photos.

  • Customise your own food. The cook will most likely create your meal from scratch using fresher ingredients.

  • Ask for less or no sauce.

  • Select foods associated with good words, such as: 'roasted', 'baked', 'grilled', 'steamed' and 'sautéed'.

  • Avoid the white menace. These are: white rice, white pasta, white bread and white potato.

  • Avoid anything that is fried. Anything called 'crispy' is most likely fried.

  • Ditch the beverages and go for table water instead.

  • If there are no healthy options available and you can't skip a meal, choose the "best of the worst" because you deserve better.

Happy dining,
