More than half of us don’t get enough sleep and when we do sleep it is not a restful sleep. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder affecting millions.
Poor sleep is linked to depression, diabetes, anxiety, stress, cardiovascular disease, sugar cravings, mood disorders, poor immune function and lower life expectancy.
Sleep affects every cell in our body.
During sleep our immune system heals, our heart rests, our brain processes information, our liver detoxifies and our growth hormones increase for our body to grow, develop and transform.
You can’t achieve optimal health without proper sleep. The truth is, we need sleep more than we need nutrition. Sleep is how our body repairs itself. Sleep resets our metabolism so that we can lose weight. Poor sleep can lead to weight gain.
Mouth breathing contributes to poor sleep. Nasal breathe as much as possible to improve your sleep. Nasal breathing increases oxygen intake and relaxation.
How to Have a Good Night Sleep:
1. Switch your phone to aeroplane mode.
2. Hydrate before and after sleep.
3. Avoid stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol after 12pm. These include black tea, green tea, red wine and chocolate.
4. Have an Epsom salt bath. Magnesium in Epsom salt will absorb through your skin acting better than a magnesium supplement for stress relief and muscle relaxation.
5. Consume probiotic-rich foods from Greek yoghurt, kefir and sauerkraut.
6. Get sufficient Vitamin D from sunlight, eggs, wild salmon and liver offal.
7. Avoid bright light an hour before bed time.
8. Sleep with cotton sheets, keep yourself cool at night to avoid overheating for a healthy skin and brain. My Favourite pillow for a good night sleep: Dunlopillo Classic luxurious latex.
Happy sleeping,
